Differences between the American and European Market

The other day I was thinking about the differences of American and European buyers. The more I get to know how Americans tick the more I think there are fundamental differences which should influence your internet marketing copy. I’ve recently read a book from Bill Bryson called Notes from a Big Country which kind of triggered this realization. I highly recommend this book, its not a marketing book but you can learn a lot about America. I think one difference from America and Europe is that in America they are more likely to expect the “magic bullet, cure all, change your life” solution. Such promises will give you good results with American customers, but I think most Europeans would reject these over-the-top promises. The European mindset is far more critical (some might say negative) than the American. This “critical mindset” also affects religious views for instance. While many Americans believe unreservedly in God and angels and everything written in the Bible, the average European probably thinks “maybe there is a God, maybe not”. Religion itself probably won’t affect your copy writing of course but it illustrates how Europeans and Americans after different. My conclusion is that if you target American customers you can “go over the top”, but don’t overdo it with British and other Europeans. You can find out if someone is from Europe or America with the user’s IP number. As far as I know there isn’t a free solution for that, but let me know if there is in the comment section.
